For Monday Spotlight: Meet Joseph Nguthiri ( @_nguthiru ) Kenyan water and environmental engineer turning fast growing water weed into biodegradable plastic alternatives through his startup, HyaPak (@HyapakEco). For years, water weeds have disrupted lakes, damaged fish habitats and affected local livelihoods in Kenya. While many saw a nuisance, Joseph saw an opportunity. In 2022, he founded HyaPak, a circular economy startup that transforms weeds harvested from Lake Naivasha and other Kenyan water bodies, including Lake Victoria, into biodegradable packaging products. Instead of letting the weeds block waterways, he turns them into packaging bags, biodegradable tree seedling bags that can be planted directly into the soil, and other eco-friendly materials that break down naturally. His work also creates jobs for local communities involved in harvesting the plant. By 2025, HyaPak had removed over 8 hectares of the weed from Lake Naivasha, helping to restore the lake’s ecological balance. His work has earned international recognition, including the United Nations Environment Programme Young Champions of the Earth Award (2025), Obama Foundation Leader (2023), and a place on 40 Under 40 Africa. A reminder that some of the biggest problems can become solutions with the right ideas.
